The solar system is our neighborhood in outer space. It consists of our star, the Sun; eight planets; five dwarf planets; hundreds of moons; and thousands of asteroids.

Most of the planets are visible to the naked eye, appearing as small, bright starlike objects in the night sky. More detail can be observed by using binoculars or a telescope.

Neptune was the first planet discovered through mathematics and later confirmed through observation. Calculations suggest that a so-far undiscovered planet, known as Planet X, may be lurking far away at the edge of our solar system.

Can you name the planets in order? This mnemonic device can help you remember: "My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos." The first letter in each word is the same as the first letter in the name of each planet.

Did you know? Not long ago, our solar system was said to have nine planets, not just eight. Pluto was then considered a small planet, but now it is known as one of the solar system's five dwarf planets. The others are named Makemake, Haumea, Ceres, and Eris.

Would you like to draw a cartoon of our solar system? This makes a great project for school or just for fun, and our easy, step-by-step drawing tutorial is here to show you how. All you will need is a pencil, an eraser, and a sheet of paper. You'll also likely want to color your finished drawing.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing the Solar System

How to Draw the Solar System Step 01

1. Begin by drawing the Sun and the first two planets. Outline the Sun using a long curved line. Make it a quarter circle at the corner of your page, because the Sun is very large! Then, draw two small circles near the Sun. One should be a bit closer than the other, and smaller, too. This small planet is Mercury, and the other is Venus.

2. Draw three more circles. The first is Earth; it should be about the same size as Venus. The next, Mars, should be slightly smaller. These are the rocky planets. The third, Jupiter, should be much larger than the other planets but still much smaller than the Sun. Jupiter is known as a gas giant.

3. Draw three more planets, larger than the first four but smaller than Jupiter. These are Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Saturn is also a gas giant; the latter two are called ice giants.

4. Draw the corona or fiery rays of the Sun. Around the edge of the Sun, draw a series of short curved lines that meet at jagged points. Then, draw several stars twinkling in the background. For each star, use four curved lines. The stars should have four points each.

5. Draw rings around Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. For each set of rings, use two curved lines. Erase as necessary.

6. Texture the planets. Draw parallel curved lines around Mercury, and swirling lines on Mars and Venus. Use curved lines to outline the familiar shapes of the continents on planet Earth.

7. Draw curved and swirling lines across the remaining planets. Texture the rings with curved lines.

9. Write the names of the planets orbiting our star. They should appear in this order: SUN, MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, MARS, JUPITER, SATURN, URANUS, NEPTUNE.

Color your solar system. The Earth is like a blue and green jewel. Neptune and Uranus also appear bluish. Mars is red, and Jupiter and Saturn are often orange and yellow.
